About Amstrad Amstrad PLC is a British corporation responsible for the design, development, marketing, and distribution of telecommunications and consumer electronic devices. Founded in 1968 by Sir Alan Alan Michael Sugar, Amstrad owns a significant chunk in the digital set top boxes (for satellite TV providers Sky, Foxtel and Sky Italia) market and is also heavily engaged in the production of low-cost electronic products like televisions, video recorders, audio products which is sold under the Amstrad and Fidelity brands. The company name is a contraction of “Alan Michael Sugar Trading”. One of the company’s premiere brands is the combined telephony and e-mail device called the “e-m@iler”, a hands-free telephone, fax machine, and answer phone in one neat package which can store up to 700 addresses and phone numbers on a 1Mb storage memory. It enables user to send emails thru a small keyboard and LCD display. The e-m@iler was later upgraded into the e-m@ilerplus in 2002. Another cutting-edge gadget called the “E3 Videophone” came out in 2004. Amstrad also manufactures audio players such as three disc vertical loading CD players, top loading CD players, touch panel CD players, and vertical CD players. Amstrad's International, based in Hong Kong serves as the factory liaison and quality control operation for the entire UK market. Complimenting the Hong Kong operation is a commercial division which sells consumer products such as audio devices on a direct shipment basis to the global market.
