Byrne claimed that the call was of importance, thought it is still no excuse for disobeying the law.  Even more ironic is the fact that Byrne is a former police officer.  As a result of the infraction, the minister was charged with a misdemeanor and fined a total of £150.00.  He also had three penalty points tacked onto his driver’s license.
