The law concerning the utilization of a mobile phone while driving a motor vehicle is rather straightforward; or at least that seems to be the case.  If we have some understanding, one would imagine that a member of the government Home Office would not only be completely aware of the legislation, but fully compliant as well.  Needless to say it was surprising to learn that immigration minister Liam Byrne was convicted for using his mobile phone while driving.

Byrne claimed that the call was of importance, thought it is still no excuse for disobeying the law.  Even more ironic is the fact that Byrne is a former police officer.  As a result of the infraction, the minister was charged with a misdemeanor and fined a total of £150.00.  He also had three penalty points tacked onto his driver’s license. There is no denying the benefits of the modern day telephone.  The concept seems pretty simple to all of us as we have been spoiled with the technology for years.  Still, you can’t belittle the fact that having the ability to communicate with someone infinite miles away is one of the greatest technological inventions of all time.

What’s not so great about the telephone is the expensive price that comes along with it.  Roaming charges and overage on your mobile along with all the sneaky fees attached to the monthly home phone bill often make for a rather frustrating situation.  Think you’ve got it bad with a costly phone bill?  Well, you might think otherwise after reading this.

The Associated Press was one of the first to report the shocking story that became renown throughout the world.  An 82 year old woman from Canton, Ohio was charged well over $14,000 in rent by AT&T for using one of the company’s phones.  Astronomical figure – this has to be one of those new multipurpose handsets with all the features, right?  Not exactly.  The charges stemmed from an old rotary phone that the widow had been using for approximately 42 years. We purchased the S795 to replace our aging Siemens-manufactured BT 4016 because we wanted an answering machine with dedicated keys. The 4016 was once a Which? market leader for sound quality.

Keyboard

The keyboard has a near ideal feel. I prefer separate keys to the ‘metal membrane’ that Siemens adopted for the SL785. The keys are reasonably sized and well separated. They operate with a satisfyingly precise click. There is none of the rubbery or wobbly feel that afflicts many cordless phone keyboards. All keys have a convincing metallic finish and are attractively backlit. The cursor/control area at the top of the keyboard is well designed. This cluster of keys looks stylish but ergonomics have not been sacrificed to achieve this. The keys are generously sized and the square cursor/control pad is raised slightly above the other keys in the cluster. Because of this, there is little danger of pressing adjacent keys unintentionally when using it. The pad has the same precise feel as the rest of the keyboard – a step forward for Siemens, because similarly shaped devices on some of their other phones can feel rather wobbly.
