The new Gigaset HC450 intercom offers real benefits to residents of single-family and duplex homes, as it allows them to speak to visitors using their cordless phone from anywhere within the house. Running to answer the front door is now a thing of the past, by simply pressing a button on a Gigaset cordless phone the door can be opened. With call forwarding all these functions can also be used remotely from a mobile phone, for example to let the cleaning lady in or to ask the postman to leave a package with a neighbor. The DECT wireless standard ensures a secure and stable connection to the intercom in the same way as it does to all cordless phones in the home.

Good points Handset is gorgeous and easy to set up. Intercom uses existing doorbell wiring. Handset(s) can eavesdrop on intercom's sensitive microphone if desired! The intercom's buttons are illuminated by an LED.

Bad points There is a 2-pin German(?) mains plug on the base of the intercom's heavy transformer; no UK adapter is provided. A travel adaptor provides a temporary fix but given the transformer's weight it should have the physical suppport of the intended mains socket. I cannot find a source of one of these in the UK - can anyone help?

Other thoughts

The intercom has relay contacts to operate an existing sounder (it can be configured for a chime, bell or buzzer). My doorbell operates immediately one of the intercom's buttons is pressed but there's a 5-second delay before the phone(s) ring - why? The silver-finished intercom is larger than necessary and lack's the phone's elegance. It comes with several translucent labels which can be tacked to a sheet of A4 with sticky tape and run through a printer to give a professional appearance. Each button can configured to give a different ring on the phone(s). I've labelled one of mine: "Under no circumstances must this button be pressed". It's amazing how many callers can't resist the temptation!
