Virtually synonymous with radio communication equipments for more than fifty years, Icom is currently the top manufacturer of amateur radio communication equipment in the world. Established in Japan in 1954 by Tokuzo Inoue, Icom’s chief products are geared towards radio amateurs, pilots, maritime applications, land mobile professional applications and radio scanner enthusiasts. The company’s operations are carried out by two divisions namely the wireless equipment and computer operations. The wireless equipment group manufactures and markets amateur radio communication/CB equipment, land-use radio communication equipment and marine-use radio communication equipment while the computer division produces personal computers and peripheral equipments.
Icom’s extensive portfolio of radio transceiver, receiver, navigation and computer products is tailor-made to suit needs of the consumer, commercial, radio-amateur, marine and aviation markets. Nearly all types of equipment is available for fixed-base, vehicle-mobile and handheld formats to meet a wide range of specifications and applications. Icom also developed the D-STAR open radio system based on digital radio protocols developed by the Japan Amateur Radio League. This system was especially designed to cater to advanced voice and data communications over amateur radio using open standards.
