About Motorola

Motorola is one of the leading American international communications companies based in Schaumburg, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. One of the foremost giant in wireless and broadband communications, Motorola is a Fortune 100 company with global sale of US$35.3 billion in 2005

The company was founded by Paul Galvin in 1928 with Galvin Manufacturing COmpany as its carrier name. In 1947, the name Motorola has been adopted although it has been used in the 1930's. He came up with the name Motorola when his company started manufacturing car radios. A number of early companies making phonographs, radios, and other audio equipment in the early 20th century used the suffix "-ola", the most famous being Victrola; RCA made a "radiola"; there was also a company that made jukeboxes called Rock-Ola, and a film editing device called a Moviola. The Motorola prefix "motor-" was chosen because the company's initial focus was in automotive electronics

During March 2006, the company reclassified its business and began operating through three segments, namely, Mobile devices, Networks and Enterprise Business, and the Connected Home Solutions. The company caters to the automotive industry through its Network and Enterprise Business segment and provides products, such as navigation systems and telematics.
