The integration of cordless phones into the twenty-first landscape is a striking confirmation of the enormous reliance that we have on these communication devices. With features that range from the customary to the outstanding, it has been confirmed so many times over that a cordless phone is the one digital device we simply cannot do without.

What proves thrilling in the tireless turning out of these units is the fact that they improve at a rate so fast that there are only a few months between the launch of a model and its semi- improved variants. Such occurrences are quite the norm. Constant improvement is the name of the game, after all.

In this sort of atmosphere, keeping to the attractions of the old corded phone that allow its users solely to make and receive calls seems too confining by half, not to mention highly inconvenient.

Take the S450 from Siemens.

Ponderous delusions often account for the high degree of difficulty that consumers suffer through in their cordless phone buying jaunts—delusions that of course, are fostered as truth by a number of cordless phone companies that insist on hailing their product models as the Latest Big Thing in the market despite the lack of performance substance to back their claims up. Hence, the unsuspecting consumer, uninitiated in the ways of the business, will have a hard time telling which is which.

Companies like Siemens, though, are taking measures to improve these problems. One fool-proof way to put a hitch on the soulless proliferation of cordless communication gadgets that demonstrate nothing but middling quality is, of course, through the company’s relentless production of laudable consumer level electronics—from the company’s Siemens Skype phone product base to its Siemens cordless units. After all, inferior phones do have a way of betraying themselves in the presence of cordless high-gadgetry products.

One such reference point of these commendable units is the S450 IP.

Options Aplenty with the Gigaset S450

Ours has always been a society entranced with the idea of preponderance; witness the many things we have to say on the subject. There is strength in numbers. The more, the merrier. Majority rules. Clearly, there is a presupposed notion of how things are supposed to go.

In the case of cordless phones for the consumer level electronics market though, this is not quite the case. Considering the wide array of cordless phones that populate the scene—these, of course, are the phones that offer nothing truly innovative in the way of user options except for the standard run of their skimpy functions—it’s no longer the majority that counts but rather the select few that manage to trounce all the others with their extensive selection of usability choices guaranteed to meet each and every conceivable leaning of even the most discerning of consumers. This is where the Gigaset product models from Siemens come in, a line-up that includes the notable Gigaset S450.

The Best of Both Worlds in the Doro 635ipw

Since Skype is revolutionizing telephony as we know it, it’s no surprise that electronics companies are entering the fray by offering phones especially designed for use with Skype. Doro, the Swedish electronics company, is no exception, having launched the Doro 635ipw this week, just in time for the Christmas shopping rush.

The Doro 635ipw is designed to be a user-friendly telephone that combines the best of both regular fixed line (or landline) calls with Skype’s cutting edge internet telephony services.

“The potential is enormous for IP telephony and therefore we don’t want to limit the usability of domestic telephones. With the Doro 635ipw we can offer everybody, young and old, a practical, easy-to-use domestic phone that’s adapted to the new generation of telephony,” says Fredrik Forssell, marketing director at Doro.

The Doro 635ipw is a cordless domestic phone that makes it possible to switch to IP telephony without having to connect via a computer. By simply pushing a button you can switch between an ordinary fixed network call and a Skype internet call. The telephone is equipped with, amongst other things, a Skype contact book known as a ”buddy list,” that makes it possible to see which friend is online and can be called.

“The trend in IP telephony is clear, with many more products being detached from computers and instead being designed for traditional domestic telephones. The telephone has shown itself superior as a communications tool for a long time and I don’t think we will see any alternative for years to come. Not least because development shows that domestic telephones are still widely used,” says Forssell.

The Doro 635ipw could very well be the perfect Christmas present for people who want to ring their nearest and dearest abroad over the Christmas holidays—and IP telephony
provides a good, cheap alternative to regular fixed-line long distance calls.
