As one the latest Plantronics headsets to hit the market this year, the .Audio 480 is bound to be subjected to a thorough looking-over from discriminating members of the consumer populace any time soon. No worries there though. Considering its many charms and talents, critics are certain to go away soundly satisfied with the .Audio 480 from Plantronics.

Little and lightweight, this Plantronics is easy on the ear and on one’s travel case, weight and space-wise. In terms of size, the .Audio 480 is the smallest headset unit there is in the current queue of Plantronics headsets . As one of the company’s Virtual Phone Booth headsets, the .Audio 480 can be expected to deliver the same degree of exceptional stereo sonics as well as voice quality to laptop users who find themselves jetting off to parts unknown. Ditto for users who simply appreciate the appeal of a noise canceling headset that works well in keeping background babble minimal, if not exactly next to nil.

As mobile professionals increased in number, appropriate consumer electronic devices needed to be developed. Markets for tech products that promised deliver convenience as well as efficiency to consumers opened. A veritable panoply of gadgets began to be introduced to the interest of the consumer public. From digital telephone systems that included cordless phones of different kinds—VoiP phones, cordless Skype phones, Wi Fi phones—to varying types of head gear like Bluetooth headsets, computer headsets, wireless headsets and others.

Aside from sound clarity, also a must-have feature for cordless phones, headsets produced to answer the demands and whims of the modern mobile professional had to be well equipped with noise canceling capabilities. Mobile professionals often have to contend with ambient noise. Whether these might be background noise itself or the sound of the wind, ambient din has always served to disturb one’s concentration. While this may be tolerable at times, too much of it can cause distractions that do nothing but delay one from accomplishing a myriad of tasks. Not exactly what one wishes to be subject to, particularly when one is desperately hot-footing it to a deadline.

In addition to mobile professionals, a growing portion of the workforce is also demanding mobile communication units for office solutions. This is apparent in the way hospital employees are using mobile cordless phones to communicate within hospital confines.

Checking from one patient to another, hospital workers are always on the move and having mobile cordless phones or in some cases, wireless headsets around, enable them to communicate that much quicker. Emergencies are better addressed and because the mobile cordless telephones allow staff members of the hospital to keep in touch, they no longer have to swing by their particular stations after checking every patient to see what orders or tasks they may have been given for the day. Such communication transactions can be handled over the mobile cordless phones or headsets. Thus, there is less time wasted and more time for employees to see to the care of their patients.

A screwy sound environment is nothing new. This is not to say that one should get used to it. Anyone who has ever found themselves at the mercy of headsets that deliver a case of the blurries each and every time knows how exceedingly valuable a noise canceling headset is. Given, of course, that the noise canceling headset in question offers users with nothing less than excellence in terms of sound quality.

While a number of headsets in the market admittedly address this specific consumer need already, there is one particular wrinkle that some of these consumer electronics gadgets haven’t been able to smooth over. Breathtaking though the bevy of features some of these headsets have, the fact that most of the said devices are not designed for on-the-go communication tasks leaves much desired.

Sony Ericsson

Bagging rank 4, Sony Ericsson kept to its progress in the global mobile cordless phone market in the second quarter, declaring a 14.2 sequential shipment increase and a stunning 58.6 percent year-over-year climb. This was the highest year-over-year growth rate achieved by any of the Top-5 handset OEMs.

By all reports, the company has obviously been on a roll for far longer than a year now. According to industry claims, it likely became more apparent when the company took over the No. 4 position from LG. Sony Ericsson has continued to announce positive shipment yields largely owing the company’s solid position in the multimedia cordless phone industry as well to its priceless brand name. The company topped a 9.4 percent market share in the second quarter of 2007. This allowed the company to maintain its position quite well, as it was still 2.2 percentage points to the lead than LG.

While Samsung was the most prominent of all Motorola rivals that had the opportunity to end up with the shiny end of the deal when Motorola got stuck with the short stick, all top mobile cordless phone OEMs were able to extend the reach of their market share at expense of Motorola’s recent losses. Nokia, one of the leading handset OEMs, was able to achieve 1.9 percentage points of share, Sony Ericsson had 0.7 of a point while LG Electronics experienced a boost in its rank by 0.9 of a percentage point.

“To get back in the mobile handset race, Motorola must improve its product mix by offering attractive high–end, highly profitable 3G models—especially in Europe,” says Teng of the iSuppli. “The company also needs to cut operating costs. It’s likely that Motorola will need at least another two quarters to regain its competitive position.”

News of the less than ideal performance that Motorola Inc. managed for its second-quarter performance in the global mobile cordless phone market seems to have paved the way for a number of its competitors, most notably Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., based on the results of a preliminary ranking done by iSuppli Corp.

In the second quarter, Motorola of the United States reportedly had 35.5 million mobile cordless phones shipped. This showed a 21.8 percent decline from the 45.4 million that was recorded in the first quarter of 2007. Company market share dropped to 13.3 percent. This was 4.6 points down from its previous 17.9 percent ranking in the first quarter. Motorola, it seems, was the sole company included in the Top-5 OEMs that took quite a hit in shipment, considering the decline it had to deal with.

On Features

This cordless Skype phone from Philips packs quite a whirl of features as well as user options enough to keep tech-curious users fiddling with its controls for days. Of course, the cordless phone’s free Skype calls are exceedingly popular.

It’s the service that other cordless phones are unable to offer. With its Skype to Skype, SkypeIn and SkypeOut applications, the Philips Voip841 allows for calls, whether International or local, to be made or received via Internet telephony, reducing costs that otherwise would have amounted to quite a lot. These Skype applications not only changed the way we keep in touch, it revolutionized the communications industry to an inch, introducing consumers to an entirely new level of interaction.

Other features of the Skype system also allows us to see any of our Skype contacts who happen to be online. Checking on the Skype voicemail is also possible, so long as we signed up for the service, of course. This application can be done by pressing down the 1 key of the device, a procedure that bears great similarity to those of mobile cordless phones so for those already familiar with it won’t have anything to worry about.

This cordless Skype phone from Philips also provides a selection of ringer tunes to amuse and delight users with. These can be activated for landline as well as Skype calls. So whether we wish to see if one of our Skype pals are online or if we simply need to forward a series of Skype calls to another number, we can accomplish all these and more with the Voip841 from Philips.

On Performances

This is where the bulk of the matter lies. On this score, the Philips Voip841 shows incredible edge over other cordless Skype phones available in the market. Whereas this Philips phone capably demonstrates a clear, uncluttered audio environment, others merely stutter and bluster.

In fact, the Voip841 from Philips delivers crisp audio that other cordless phones seem leagues apart. The results of a variety of test calls are positive proof of the audio talents of this digital telephone. There are no delays in response time that make communication more than a trifle strained for both parties on the line. In addition, we can bid the blurries a hearty fare-thee-well as the sound environment of the Philips Voip841 for its calls remain free of such troublesome quirks.

Other notable qualities of this cordless telephone also include the strength of the unit’s connection. Strolling along different rooms in an office location did not result in a drop or total blowout of the telephone’s connection. Nor did call quality become less-than-ideal. No interference goblins showed up, largely due to the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) technology that the cordless phone was designed with. This cordless phone can go beyond 12 hours of glorious talk time.

Overall

So if we happen to find ourselves at a loss, wondering how we can possibly cope with the ‘death’ of our old cordless telephone systems, we don’t have to let regret get in the way. The Voip841 from Philips offers a compelling alternative to take the place of our trusty old digital telephone. Ideal on all fronts: style, performance and price, the Voip841 from Philips proves that sometimes, we lose something we deem important because something better is already on its way.

However, in this case, most of us can safely agree that losing a cordless phone through such disastrous circumstances may be easier to swallow than watching one’s cordless phone fall victim to the slow, deteriorating process that all obsolete consumer electronics end with. See it grow substandard and exhibit poor quality performance. Observe it as its call environment starts to gain crackles and its call wait, call hold, call ID and other calling features malfunction. Nothing is ever going to be the same again.

So, yes, for most of us, it is actually less torturous to lose our cordless phones through mitigating circumstances than be subjected to days when our cordless phones can no longer provide us with the communication assistance it used to. That way, we can start with a clean slate, with no bitterness and no grievances.

And for good, fresh starts, one can do no better than the Philips Voip841. As far as cordless phone units go, the Voip841 from Philips is certain to get any professional suffering from the lamentable loss of a trustworthy digital telephone system to sit up, take stock of life and be back on his or her feet, in no time at all.

We may be exceptionally in command of ourselves at times but the rest of the universe still falls outside that grasp. One way through which this becomes quite evident is when our choice of cordless phones irrevocably fails us. There may be a number of reasons for this: the telephone system in question may be too old, it’s past its prime, better to let it go with grace—yes, reasons certainly abound.

Or perhaps, one or two things have set the cosmic cue for Murphy’s Law in motion again. The same force that behooves us to pluck our cordless phone out of the shambles of files and paper clips we call desks, stretching arms and fingers right to an inch of the digital telephone in question, flushed with triumph—only to propel the glass of water beside it, tipping its contents over the telephone in question.

And while we dash to the side of the desk in a feeble attempt to stop the water from flowing into the cordless phone and over the edge, rules of gravity decree that water must always be faster than the human body.
