We may be exceptionally in command of ourselves at times but the rest of the universe still falls outside that grasp. One way through which this becomes quite evident is when our choice of cordless phones irrevocably fails us. There may be a number of reasons for this: the telephone system in question may be too old, it’s past its prime, better to let it go with grace—yes, reasons certainly abound.
Or perhaps, one or two things have set the cosmic cue for Murphy’s Law in motion again. The same force that behooves us to pluck our cordless phone out of the shambles of files and paper clips we call desks, stretching arms and fingers right to an inch of the digital telephone in question, flushed with triumph—only to propel the glass of water beside it, tipping its contents over the telephone in question.
And while we dash to the side of the desk in a feeble attempt to stop the water from flowing into the cordless phone and over the edge, rules of gravity decree that water must always be faster than the human body. Yet again, with wads of wet papers and folders, we scramble to soak up the puddle forming on the floor, and hearing a shrill ring, leap up from our mopping-up labors, exclaiming “Why, it still works!” at the short-circuiting telephone—only to find out that the sound belongs to another cordless phone unit, in someone else’s neat and tidy office.
Such woebegone days are not that rare that we forget what it feels like to suffer from them. In command of our minds, if not exactly of our bodies, communication woes come in many forms and these are simply a few of them. Physical forces aside, we haven’t even delved into internal problems yet. The scenario could go the other way, with the day starting on a good note, letting us traipse along to work with a spring in our steps. And we arrive at the office, ready and willing to spread cheer and good will toward our fellow workers when we find our cordless phones refusing to acknowledge the possibility of a dial tone. Further inspection reveals that only a well-skilled technician, who is unavailable at the moment, will be able to set the matter to rights again.
There are a number of mishaps that can overtake our cordless phones. And whether these are induced by the substandard qualities of the cordless phones themselves or simply the end result of unfortunate events, it happens and we have no other recourse in life than acceptance.
